Since they’re great for treating acne, blackheads, and clogged pores, BHAs are extremely popular in skincare. Let’s talk about how and why they’re so effective!
what is a BHA and how does it work?
BHAs are beta hydroxy acids, which are a type of chemical compound. They work both on the skin’s surface, and at the pore level, helping treat acne and congestion in skin!
BHAs are oil soluble, which allows them to penetrate into pores and work to unclog them. That’s why they’re so helpful for acne - they target congestion within pores, leaving them clear and allowing the skin to heal!
Though BHAs are used mainly for pore-related concerns, they do also provide some gentle surface exfoliation, sloughing away dead skin cells and leaving skin smoother.
In addition to all of these benefits, BHAs can even help reduce excess oil production and reduce the appearance of pores.
The most popular BHA in skincare is good ol’ salicylic acid, which is an FDA-certified acne treatment when used in concentrations of 0.5% - 2%. Salicylic acid, which can be naturally derived from the bark of white willows or the leaves of wintergreens, also happens to be the star ingredient of our probiotic acne serum; we use it at 1.5%!
how do I incorporate the probiotic acne serum into my skincare routine?
Use our BHA-charged serum after cleansing, toning, and any spot treatments, but before moisturizer. Allow to dry for 1-2 minutes before applying other products and make sure to use SPF during the day as well!
If you’re new to using a BHA, we recommend using this product 2 or 3 times a week and gradually ramping up to daily use.
