what is the skin barrier and extracellular matrix?
the skin barrier is considered the stratum corneum (the outermost layer of skin) and the extracellular matrix. The extracellular matrix is composed mostly of lipids (ceramides, fatty acids, cholesterol) in addition to collagen, elastin, and enzymes. You can think of the skin barrier as a brick wall, the skin cells are the bricks and the extracellular matrix is the mortar holding the bricks together.
how can you repair a damaged skin barrier?
